Notes from Nobles County History
In 1890 and 1891 there began moving into the Leota, Edgerton a stream of Dutch Settlers that was to turn the community into a veritable Dutch Colony. Though the settlement was more an economic or national migration, the important role of religion is wonderfully testified to by the fact that among the first buildings constructed at the Leota Townsite was the church.
Like the point of an iceberg which is but a hint of the far greater mass below the ocean surface, this first Leota Church was an indication of the massive substructure of religious conviction underlying the Dutch movement to Leota.
Settlement in Leota grew out of earlier settlement at Orange City Iowa. The middle of the 19th Century, in fact saw the development of there major Dutch Colonies west of the eastern sea Board, Holland, Michigan; Pella, Iowa; and Orange City, Iowa.
